Chill Rolls

chill and heat transfer rolls, industrial chiller rolls

Chiller rolls are used in many processes where temperature control is critical to product quality or product safety. The primary purpose of a chill roll is to remove heat from the product before any downstream operations. Typical heat transfer and finishing applications in the plastics industry include extruding flat sheet and cast film, and coating operations. No matter the process, the design criteria usually remains the same: roll load, face deflection, and heat removal rate.

Several Key Factors are Necessary to Determine Heat Removal or Cooling Capabilities:

  • Polymer type
  • Melt temperature
  • Specific heat of the polymer
  • Maximum extruder output
  • Desired output temperature
  • Coolant flow rate

The coolant flow rate determines the ability of a roll to remove the required heat and temperature variation across a roll face. Sufficient flow must occur for proper cooling.

Temperature transfer is accomplished in these cooling units when the warmer process material comes in contact with the cooler roller surface and the process material is chilled. The chill roll stays cool by pumping chilled liquid, often from a portable chiller, through tubes, pipes or coils inside the roller. Often, this temperature transfer requires precise control to effectively create the desired chemical reaction or chill time for the process.

Where are Heat Transfer Rolls Used?

Some Common Industrial Processes where Chill Rolls are used Include:

  • Adhesives
  • Ceramics
  • Chemicals
  • Coatings
  • Cosmetics
  • Dental composites
  • Feed mills
  • Food processing
  • Glass
  • Inks
  • Paints
  • Pharmaceuticals
  • Pigments
  • Plastics
  • Sealants

Delta T Systems offers a variety of efficient chillers to maintain exact temperature control in conjunction with chill rolls.

Our newest chiller was released for sale in July of 2017. The Variable Speed Chiller is a high-efficiency chiller featuring a variable-speed compressor that adjusts its speed to use only the power needed, allowing it to operate efficiently when running anywhere in the range of 10 to 100 percent of rated capacity. State-of-the-art controls, an electronic expansion valve, and variable speed condenser fans work together to create the most accurate and efficient chiller on the market today. No matter what the process chilling needs, Delta T Systems can provide an industrial process chiller to efficiently and effectively chill your process.
