Open circuit cooling towers are specialized heat exchanger structures in which air and water are brought into direct contact with each other to effect a transfer of heat. Cooling is accomplished by spraying water in a rain-like downward pattern, and by forcing an upward flow of cool through the falling water drops. In this heat exchanging process the heat gained by the air approximately equals the heat lost by the water, the net result being a cooling of the water used in a thermal process.
